Can you build during the monsoon? Yes — with the right precautions for excavation, concrete, steel, cement storage and site safety. Here's the checklist.
Construction doesn't have to stop between June and September in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, but the rain demands extra care.
Excavation and foundations
- Avoid open foundation pits for long — water weakens the soil at the bottom.
- Pump out water and remove slush before PCC.
- Plan foundation work for drier spells where possible.
Concrete work
- Don't pour concrete during heavy rain; keep tarpaulins ready to cover fresh concrete.
- Rain naturally helps curing, but standing water on a fresh slab must be drained.
- Adjust the water added to the mix — wet aggregates already carry water.
Materials
- Store cement on raised platforms, under cover, away from walls.
- Keep steel off the ground and covered to prevent rusting.
- Protect sand from washing away.
Brickwork and plastering
- Avoid plastering external walls during continuous rain.
- Cover newly built walls at the top.
Site safety
- Secure electrical connections and use waterproof boards.
- Make scaffolding and walkways non-slip.
