Choosing a plot as per Vastu: the best shapes, facings and slopes, what to avoid, and how a good architect balances Vastu with light, ventilation and budget.
For many families in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Vastu is an important part of choosing a plot. Here are the commonly followed principles.
Shape
- Square and rectangular plots are preferred.
- Irregular, triangular or cut corners — especially a cut north-east corner — are usually avoided.
- A plot extended towards the north-east is considered favourable.
Facing
- East and north facing plots are the most sought after.
- West and south facing plots are perfectly usable with the right layout — the entrance position and room placement matter more than the facing itself.
Slope and level
- Land sloping down towards the north or east is preferred.
- The south-west should ideally be the highest part of the plot.
Surroundings
- Avoid a road ending directly at the plot (T-junction, "veedhi shoola") unless remedied.
- Open space towards the north and east is good.
Balancing Vastu with practical design
A good design keeps Vastu principles — kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west, puja room in the north-east — while still giving you natural light, cross ventilation, parking and municipal setbacks.
